Trying a new skin Philosophy

So I went out to Sephora today

(which, I should really get a job there. I am so much better with make up than many of the people working in there. And I would - for the discount I assume you get, if nothing else - except that they always have 96 people working in there and I don't believe I would like it very much with all those other people)

and I totally planned on buying some of the mineral make up that everyone recommended, to see if maybe that would help my skin clear up

(FYI, I called my GYN office to see if going off the pill could cause my face to break out and the nurse told me that it probably wouldn't cause my face to break out, but that the Rx I'd been on all these years does in fact help prevent breakouts so it's entirely possible that I do have adult-onset acne and the pill was just keeping it in check.)

but once I got there and tried it on I just couldn't do it. Now I admit, I didn't try it on my face because I already had make up on. But I buffed it onto the back of my hand and I didn't care for the finish at all. It actually looked kind of sparkly. Is it sparkly? As a rule, I really don't put sparkly on my face. Except maybe a little on my eyes should the occasion call for it.

Anyway, the foundation I'm using (Sue Devitt) is water-based and full of all kinds of natural ingredients and it's not supposed to clog your pores or break out your skin. So I'm going to stick with it for now and try a new cleanser routine that's geared toward breakouts.

I bought some Philosophy cleaner (purity made simple) and something called an "exfoliating moisturizer" (hope in a bottle), both of which are supposed to treat what they demurely call "congested skin."

However, if you are going to use that term, I highly recommend that you be sipping sweet tea on the veranda.

I was breaking out like mad until I switched from my normal cleanser (Origins) to Philosophy and my makeup from MAC to Bare Escentuals. I RARELY - stress rarely - break out unless it is PMS related. I think you are going to enjoy Philosophy - they even have an exfoliating cleanser when you are ready for that step.

Sephora is trouble for me - as is ULTA. Seems I can't go into that store without spending a nice chunk of change. *sigh*

If Bare Essentials is the mineral makeup everyone recommended, then I hate that crappe and find that it IS sparkly. The mineral makeup from L'Oreal is MUCH better (really! I'm not kidding!) and WAY cheaper, too. So you have more money for shoes!

I've been wanting to try that makeup but I'm a very simple makeup girl. I'm just not sure I'd know what to do with all those little pots of powder and brushes everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I do wear make up, just very lightly and very few products. Mascara is my favorite!

My understanding is that MAC has some type of oil in it that can clog pores. I stopped using it months ago, switch foundations and now my face doesn't break out as much as it did before. Now I only use MAC lipstick and eyeliner but no powder.

"purity made simple" by philosophy is nice and gentle and I used to use it. Lately, I've had the best luck with Neutragena's Acne Stress Control foaming cleanser. I'm pregnant and my skin wigged the f- out with the hormones.

I hate being in my 30s and having persnikety skin. It's sucky.

I too went to the Sephora (probably the same one, since I am also in Memphis)recently, and also bought the Purity Made Simple, and Hope in a Bottle. I almost choked at the price, but I felt I needed it. I can say I have been using the Purity face wash for about 2 months now, and I can tell a difference. However, the Hope in a Bottle seems quite drying to me, and I can not tell that it has done much to prevent breakouts. It does not feel very moisturizing. However, since it was so expensive, I will continue to use it until it runs dry. Maybe it will get better over the course of time.

yeah, I'm not sure I understand that. They call it a moisturizer but then it says on the bottle that it may cause dryness and peeling. WTF??

Hi again Kalisa. I don't see a sparkly effect on my skin when I wear the Bare Minerals. I, too, despise sparkly. I use their concealer, foundation and Mineral Veil with their associated brushes. I don't do the bronzers or glimmer stuff and I know they come with the kit but ignore them. The makeup is light and natural looking. I get lots of compliments on my skin and people are always surprised when I tell them that I actually have a full face of makeup on. The other draw for me is how quick and easy it goes on which would be true of any mineral makeup. It also lasts a long time. I have tried the Loreal mineral makeup as I thought I could save some money but it was too cakey for me and didn't seem to blend into my skin. (Gosh, I feel like an infoblogmercial) If the Sue Devitt doesn't work please consider actually trying the makeup. Go into Sephora and have them make you up with it and wear for a day and see how you like it. Also let us know how you like the Purity as I have looked at it during one of my Sephora forays.
P.S. For kellyg:
Sephora has a great return policy when you don't like a product. I think it might only be 30 days but I've done it and they really don't mind. You might see if you could return the Hope in a Bottle or exchange it for something else since it dries you skin.

I spent so much money on Philosophy products because of so many rave reviews and was completely disappointed. My face took forever to heal after than. Now I'm using burt's bees tomato soap and a teeny tiny dab of vasoline and am having much better results.

That's where I get my bare minerals, and yes the makeup ladies in there suck kinda hard. But luckily it's kinda difficult to fuck up bare minerals, unless of course you apply too much warmth.
