Sorry, could you say that a bit BIGGER please?

I've worn glasses since I was 12 (contacts since 14). My eyesight went from bad to worse to "legally blind" several years back. I'm one of those people who keeps my glasses in an exact spot on my bedside table. If they're not there, I'm screwed. I NEED my glasses to FIND my glasses.

When I went to the eye doctor 4 or 5 months ago, he noted my age and checked my near-vision. Which was fine. A-OK. Not getting old eyes here. Nope, not me. I laughed how my sister uses reading glasses on top of her contacts and he explained to me that it's two completely different things. The far-sightedness is a matter of the shape of your eyes (or something like that. IDK, go read webMD if you want facts) while the near-sightedness that sets in with age is a matter of those muscles required for close-up focusing losing their elasticity and ability to focus the eye.

Whatev.

I lost my first tooth when I was 8. Didn't get my period until I was 14. Boobs didn't come along until after high school. I am the epitomic late bloomer. My body thinks it's much younger than it actually is.

The way I calculate it, I got at least another five years before I need reading glasses. AT LEAST.

Only Memphis magazine didn't see it the same way.

One of my favorite periodicals, I pick it up every month at the grocery store. (I know, Mary Helen! I KNOW! I should subscribe! I KNOW!!) Today I picked up the December issue (I'm running a little late this month) and came home to read their gift guide suggestions and the fiction contest winner (it was not me), only...

I TOTALLY COULD NOT FOCUS ON THE PAGES. And dude, did it suck. I said to Big Daddy, "I think I need reading glasses." and of course he laughed at me. He thinks I'm "stuck on" this "getting old" thing. I tried to explain to him, "I'm not 'stuck on' this getting old thing...I AM GETTING OLD."

Reading glasses? Sounds like a good opportunity for a new fashion accessory to me!

It was at precisely this time that I finally gave up my contacts (worn since age 12) for graduated lens bi-focals, because I knew I'd never be able to hang on to a pair of reading glasses or ever have them with me when I needed them, nor would I be willing to hang 'em off some dorky chain. It's actually been something of a blessing, because it's now official that I am not sexy or gorgeous, so if I don't get around to shaving my legs for a couple of weeks or don't feel like flat ironing that one hunk of hair that always goes wonky, I just say to myself "Eh, it doesn't matter, I WEAR GLASSES." As for keeping those glasses on the nightstand, I actually don't answer the phone till I grab for the glasses, because apparently I can't hear if I can't see. I know.

dont wanna scare you dear, but I'm as much a late bloomer as you. in fanct, I have 2 wisdom teeth that still refuse to come in (he he). And we won't mention that I'm still waiting on the boobs.
Anyhow, with all the closeup work I do sewing, I noticed it was bugging me last spring to do it wearing my glasses. Seems I lost interest in contacts after #2 was born. Then #3 came along and refused to sleep at night for 8 months. So contacts were a pipe dream.
But I got new glasses a few months ago. Not that nasty B word...(bifocal), but the invisible alternative. I'm told I'll probably need new lenses in another year. Sucks, these cost $525!

This is why I had laser surgery - to be free from early morning glasses search - slap-slap on the night stand... Watching all those films when some poor guy loses his glasses when monsters attack and he dies. My husband laughed at me when I cited this as one of the main reasons to have surgery - what if we are taken hostage? And I lose my glasses!!!!!
But I was told that I'll need reading glasses just like anybody else. It sucks! Try to find a cool looking pair! I knew a girl who matched her glasses to her outfits... At least reading glasses cost less than the other kind!

I can totally relate to your vision woes! I've been wearing glasses since I was 9, and have had contacts on and off since I was 16. If I don't put my glasses in the EXACT SAME PLACE every night before bed, I am SO SCREWED in the morning. On my last eye exam, the doctor said he was beginning to see the signs of farsightedness and I'd probably need bifocals soon. Ugh.
